Waffles and Knitting
Mar 25, 2023What is the link between Norwegian knitting and Norwegian waffles? They are both strongly inherited in our culture and history.
And, today is the Norwegian Waffle Day - yes there is a day for most things in life 🧇
Norwegian waffles (or "vafler" as they are called in Norwegian) are a type of waffle that is a popular snack or dessert in Norway. They are typically made with a batter that includes flour, sugar, eggs, milk, and often, sour cream and cardamom. Norwegian waffles are different from Belgian or American-style waffles in that they are thinner, softer, and have smaller squares.
The traditional way to serve Norwegian waffles is with a dash of sour cream and a spoonful of jam, usually strawberry or raspberry ... or the typical Norwegian brown goat cheese. A sweet cheese that is very Norwegian and the type of cheese that you either love or hate :D
Norwegian waffles are a beloved part of Norwegian culture and are often served at social gatherings, including family gatherings, church events, and celebrations. They are also a popular snack to enjoy on ski trips or outdoor excursions.
If you want to give them a try, here is my recipe.
- 3 eggs
- 1 dl sugar
- 5 dl kefir milk (people also use ordinary milk and water, but the kefir gives it a sour taste to it that I personally like)
- 350 grams flour
- 1 ts baking powder
- 1 ts vanilla powder
- ½ ts cardamom
- 125 g melted butter/margarine
Smash it all into a bowl and beat until you get a smooth batter ... let it rest for half an hour before you start cooking them. If it is too thick you can add some more milk or a small amount of water. Make sure you add it in small increments, if the batter is too thin it becomes more like pancakes - the Norwegian thin pancakes that is, what many of you call crepe ;)
